The recent General Election campaign focused on issues such as health, education and the economy.  questions of justice rarely formed part of the debate even though, in this 800th year since Magna Carta, the Legal Aid budget has been severely reduced.  And that abroad ineffective justice systems are responsible for keeping many millions in poverty.

Where is the Christian voice in all of this?  Does the Church have a response? Are we concerned? Yet we are told to “Speak up for those who cannot speak up for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.”

Andrew Caplen is the immediate Past President of the Law Society of England and Wales.  He has spoken and written widely on justice issues both in the UK and abroad.  He is the co-author of the Theos publication “Speaking up – defending and deliverying access to justice today” and was named in the 2015 Debretts/Sunday Times list as one of the 500 most influential persons in the UK.  He is married to Rev Lindsay Caplen, a Baptist Minister and BMS World Mission Trustee.
